Whip It. Whip it good.

Kick-ass chicks. Roller derby. Bad-ass nicknames. What could be better? Nothing i tell you.
Whip It is basically a movie about this small-town girl Bliss who leads a boring life working at the Oink Joint and is guiltily forced into doing beauty pageants by her mom. Bliss is soooo not a beauty pageant type of girl.
She ends up being exposed to the hardcore world of all chick roller derby, (Can I just say how much I want one of those nicknames? I mean, Bloody Holly, Juana Beatn', Maggie Mayhem, Smashley Simpson..) and soon  finds herself as the newest star of the Hurl Scouts -BABE RUTHLESS!  Too bad they are the worst team in the league.

There is a little romance in the mix and even though I don't like the way the romance played out, it ends up being some of my favorite interactions (besides the ones where the girls get to knock each other out) . If I could insert a movie moment into my life, the scene at the pool would be one of them . (Even though in real life it couldn't happen cause i wear contacts and wouldn't be able to open my eyes, and if I didn't have them in I wouldn't be able to see underwater at all..oh well).

Whip ItI found myself cracking up quite a bit during this movie, which just increased the awesome-meter. Overall I thought the casting choices were great. I love Ellen Page (also in Juno) who plays the main character Bliss. If I had to describe her in one word it would be REAL. She doesn't make it look like acting, if you know what I mean, and I like that she's a bit odd, or not your usual cookie-cutter starlett. Juliette Lewis was the perfect casting to play rival derby girl Iron Maven, though I couldn't help having flashbacks to her in What's Eating Gilbert Grape..And I love me some Drew Barrymore who actually helped direct this movie.

Bottom line:  One of my new favorite movies.  So get your bad-assness on and check it out!

  1. I saw this movie right after it came out because I was dying to see it. And it was awesome. But most importantly, it had Landon Pigg in it and I love his music. LOVE it.
