Feature and Follow (#2)

FF 2012 Feature & Follow #122

Feature & Follow is a way to gain new followers and meet new people! You follow them, they follow you and vice versa!  For more information visit the hosts: Parajunkee's View and Alison Can Read.

This week's question is:

Do you mind books with similar ideas to other books? Similar concepts, backgrounds, retellings or pulled-to-publish fanfic?

My answer to this would be it depends.  There are LOTS of books out there that have general concepts that are similar. It's up to the author to spin it in their own way. For example: coming-of-age stories. These can get repetitive and boorish but if done right, amazing. It's up to the author to put their own spin on things, make their characters interesting and suck us in with their writing. Take a common theme and make it their own. However, I do NOT want to read about the same worlds over and over. I need variety and imagination and creativity. I don't want the book I'm reading to remind me of another book. I want it to be all its own.

I've read a bunch of retellings, and pretty much all of them thus far have been very disappointing.

Anyways,  follow me and I will follow you back!
I'll be leaving for Charleston, South Carolina this morning (going to YALLFEST on Saturday!!) and will not have computer access until I get back on Monday. So everyone who comments/follows my blog THANK YOU and I PROMISE to follow you back upon my return! !

AND if you have any ideas of some good book retellings please let me know :)

  1. As for retellings, I love the fairy tale ones! Cinder is apparently a good twist of Cinderella, haven't read it yet but will soon!

There is a line of books that are older, I read them in the early 2000s when they first were printed, that were a bunch of different retellings of fairy tales by lots of different authors. It had a sometimes title of The Once Upon a Time series, but I don't know how accurate that is.

My fave was Snow by Tracy Lynn--I think that's right. It had a very different twist to Snow White that I found enjoyable! I read it several times since in those days I did not have enough to read!

  3. The books that I most often end up not enjoying are the ones that tread familiar territory without adding anything new at all to make them stand out.

  9. I agree! I need creativity too. I love high fantasy, but I need to become fully immersed in the world for me to believe the story. If it's a re-telling, the author needs to bring something ~special to the table. They need to make it their own.

New follower via GFC! Have fun at YAFest!

  11. I agree. I don't mind similar concepts as long as the author puts their own spin on it. I do mind when they just go into the world another author has already created. Thanks for stopping by my FF this week. I'm following you back.
